Develop Report:
This year's theme was Bubble. At first, I thought of something a bit like SpongeBob and Patrick. Then, I came up with a multi-perspective narrative— a story about people buying, selling, and making bubbles.
In my initial idea, the story involved many interconnected characters, kind of like a fictional underground society built around bubbles. But in the end, I simplified it to focus on one person's self-reflection.
What I love most is that moment of sudden realization—like a stone shattering glass, or a butterfly fluttering right in front of you. That one second when you break away from your dull routine and suddenly start seeing the world in more colors.
I don’t care where that detour leads; what I long for is the courage to take it and the possibility it holds. So, at the end of the game, the protagonist says:"I don’t want to wait even one more day. I’m leaving, to a place I don’t even know the name of." They abandon their own arm and leave, carrying that bright yellow possibility.
The development process went pretty smoothly. The mechanics aren’t perfect, but at least there are no major bugs—I'll take that as a win.In total, I really only worked on it Friday night, all of Saturday, and Sunday morning.
After finishing a run-through, I handed it off to some (very patient) friends to playtest. Their feedback made me so happy—it was genuinely rewarding to hear their thoughts. I don’t like over-explaining things in my stories; I love it when people take the existing foundation and spin their own interpretations.
That said, the beginning of the game is quite frustrating. For about three whole minutes, players are just blowing bubbles with no apparent purpose. It was agonizing enough that my playtester told me they felt like I was messing with them. During every in-person playtest, I kept repeating: "BE PATIENT, please!!!" But yeah, those three minutes really are torturous (even I didn’t want to sit through them while testing).
So, huge thanks to my playtester friends! Explaining my work to others in person was pretty nerve-wracking, but hearing people read out the lines I wrote—it hit different.
All in all—just happy! 🎉
